What stays in your browser
The player remembers where you stopped so it can offer to resume, and the site uses that to show a Continue listening row and to mark episodes you have finished. On an episode page you can also save a moment to a notebook, and tick an episode you heard somewhere else so the founder map can color it in. All of it is kept in your own browser's storage and never sent to us or to anyone else: no page reads it back to the server, and it does not follow you to another browser or device. Here is every key the site keeps:
nwaf:pos:*- Where you stopped in each episode you started, in seconds, so the player can offer to resume and the Continue listening row can list it.
nwaf:done- The numbers of the episodes you played to the end on this site.
nwaf:rate- Your playback speed.
nwaf:draft:*- A nomination, sponsorship or contact message you started writing and have not sent.
nwaf:notes- Your notebook: each chapter, transcript turn or quote you saved, with the episode number, the minute, the words, who said them, the guest, the time you saved it and any note you typed beside it.
nwaf:heard- The numbers of the episodes you ticked as heard somewhere else, such as a podcast app, so the founder map can count them.
nwaf:intro- When this tab last opened one of our pages, whether this visit is still owed the full opening animation, which of the site's five sections have already had their turn this visit, and how many of their short animations this visit has used, counted even when your device's settings keep them from showing, kept in session storage, which your browser empties when the tab is closed, and never sent anywhere; the full animation plays at most once a visit and each section's short one at most once a visit, no more than three in all, a tab opened from one of our pages carries on the same visit and plays neither, and a visit starts again after half an hour without opening one of our pages in this tab.
nwaf:motion- Your choice to turn off the opening animations and the fade between pages, set on the accessibility page and kept in this browser until you change it or clear its site data.
Clearing your browser data removes all of them. The Continue listening row's Clear history button forgets your places, the episodes you finished, the ones you ticked as heard and your notebook, and asks first when the notebook holds anything. The notebook has its own Clear button, and the founder map can forget your ticks on its own. The share card the map draws is made in your browser from those ticks; it goes nowhere unless you download it or share it yourself.
The hosts' sign-in
The show's analytics dashboard is for the hosts and their team, behind a shared sign-in. Signing in sets one cookie, nwaf_dash, which keeps that browser signed in for 30 days, is sent only to the dashboard's own pages, and holds nothing but its expiry and a signature. A visitor who never signs in never receives it, and Sign out on the dashboard removes it.
Ask the archive
A question typed into Ask the archive is sent to this site's own server, which searches the transcripts and passes the question and the matching passages to Cloudflare's Workers AI to write the answer. Questions are not tied to you, and we do not keep a log of who asked what. Recent answers are cached for a day so a repeated question is answered without asking the model again, which means a question you type may be answered from a copy produced for someone else who asked the same thing.
Forms and email
The nomination, sponsorship, contact and newsletter forms send the fields you typed to this site's own server, which passes them to a spreadsheet in the show's own Google account and emails a copy to the show's inbox. That is how a submission reaches us. If the server cannot be reached, the form falls back to assembling the message in your browser and handing it to your own email program instead, and then nothing is recorded, because a message sent from your mail program leaves us no copy. That record holds only what you typed into the form, plus which form it was, the date and time it arrived, and the two-letter country code Cloudflare attaches to the request. It does not include your IP address, and there is no tracking of any kind attached to it.
If you would rather not leave that record, use the Copy the message button and email us yourself. Nothing is sent to the server in that case.
The newsletter
The address you give the newsletter form is kept on the newsletter tab of that same spreadsheet in the show's Google account. When an issue goes out, it is sent to each address from the show's Gmail account, one email per address, and a reply to it reaches the show's inbox. Each delivery is noted against your address: the date, the issue, and whether it was sent or failed.
Every issue carries a link that takes you off the list: open it and press the one button on the page. Emailing nwafounders@gmail.com does the same by hand. Unsubscribing, or an issue that comes back undelivered, marks your address so it is not mailed again.
The map
The founder map, and the map near the foot of each city page, draw their tiles from OpenStreetMap. Loading a tile tells them your IP address and which part of the map you are looking at, the way any request to any website does, and nothing else about you goes with it. Apart from those maps, no page here loads anything from another company until you press play on an episode, open its Video tab, press play on a clip or a live taping, or type a question into the archive assistant. The section below says exactly who sees what in each of those cases.
What third parties see
- Audio. Episodes stream from Transistor, which logs standard request data such as your IP address, as any host does.
- Video. YouTube's player loads only when you open an episode's Video tab or press play on a clip or a live taping, never before, and uses the privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie.com domain. The Video tab starts the video at the minute the audio has reached, which is part of that request; a place the player has only saved in your browser is never sent. The player, and the programs that read the show's own YouTube statistics, use YouTube API Services; once a video loads, what YouTube receives is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
- Map. The founder map and the city page maps load tiles from OpenStreetMap.
- Hosting. The site runs on Cloudflare, which handles the request and may keep short-lived operational logs.
Do Not Track
The site sets no tracking cookies and follows nobody from site to site, so it treats a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal the same as no signal: there is nothing here for either one to switch off. Once you press play on a video, YouTube (Google) handles that request under its own privacy policy and may recognize you the way it does on other sites; this site cannot make it honor the signal. Transistor, OpenStreetMap and Cloudflare see your IP address as described above.
Analytics
There is no analytics script on this site. Listening figures come from the podcast host and from the reports each platform gives the show about its own audience, which are totals, not records of any one listener. None of it comes from watching you here.
When what this page says changes, the date at the top changes with it, and the current version is always this page.
